AHCMOM213 Operate & Maintain Chainsaws - This unit of competency covers the maintenance, preparation and operation of hand-held chainsaws in a work environment. It requires the application of skills and knowledge to cross-cut fallen timber using appropriate cutting techniques to maximise volume and quality recovery. It also requires knowledge of licensing and OHS legislative requirements associated with chainsaw operation along with duty of care to self, others and the environment. The work in this standard is likely to be carried out under routine supervision with intermittent checking within enterprise guidelines.
AHCPCM203 Fell small trees - This competency standard covers the process of small tree felling work where hazards are assessed as low risk. Felling requires assessing conditions and surroundings, and identifying falling requirements, preparing and maintaining felling equipment, bringing the tree down, and completing clean-up operations. Tree felling is usually performed under routine supervision with intermittent checking. Responsibility for some roles and coordination within a team may be required. Competency is demonstrated by the application of knowledge and skills to a range of tree felling tasks and roles usually within established enterprise guidelines.
AHCMOM213 Operate & Maintain Chainsaws(Level 1) - 1 Day
AHCPCM203 Fell small trees (Level 2) - 1 Day
AHCMOM213 Operate and Maintain Chainsaws must be completed before doing AHCPCM203 Fell small trees. There are no other specific entry requirements.
There are two (2) units of competency used in this course
- AHCMOM213 Operate and Maintain Chainsaws
- AHCPCM203 Fell small trees
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Recognise and apply workplace safety procedures
- Check and maintain chainsaw
- Operate chainsaw
- Complete and check chainsaw operations
- Identify tree felling requirements
- Prepare for tree felling
- Fell tree
- Complete tree felling operation
Participants who demonstrate competency by successfully completing 2 units of competency will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Participants will be required to successfully complete a series of assessment tasks which may include a written exam, workbook, observation/practical demonstration and case studies.
Prospective participants may be eligible to receive RPL or credit transfer depending on whether they have any previous industry experience or hold existing qualifications. Applicants should speak with AST at the time of enrolment to discuss these options further.
Each person will need to bring with them to each day of the course:
- Steel cap work boots
- Long sleeve High Visibility shirt
- Long Pants
- Water bottle
Hard hat, chainsaw and all safety clothing will be supplied on the day by All States Training.
